Traditional Acupuncture

Acupuncture is  based on energy patterns that flow through the body.  These energy patterns and flow are essential for health.  Imbalance or disruptions are believed to be responsible for disease. Acupuncture helps balance energy flow bringing our bodies closer to or back to a healthier state.  How?  When a needle is inserted it sends a signal to the brain causing the release of endorphins, the feel good hormone. This chemical reaction allows the improvement of both blood and energy, putting the body back into balance. At Total Health Guidance we offer a wide variety of programs and treatments to meet patients’ needs.   We offer traditional acupuncture as well as needle-less acupuncture.

Chinese Herbs

Chinese herbs are nutritional supplements that rarely have side effects and improve organ function. They are also extremely helpful in advancing the body’s detoxification process. The use of herbal preparations can fill an important gap in the process where traditional pharmaceutical medications do little or nothing to address the root problem and have extensive side effects.

There are many ailments that acupuncture can help address:

Pain and Arthritis: Auto accident, toothache, joint pain, bursitis, frozen shoulder, low back pain, swollen and painful knee, foot, ankle or heel.
Headaches: Migraine, tension or cluster headaches, headaches due to sinus, hypertension, PMS or cervical spine disorders.
Sexual Dysfunction: Male impotence, prostate problems, menstrual cramps or dysmenorrheal, PMS, infertility, menopausal syndrome, malposition of fetus, and morning sickness.
Stress: Anxiety, depression, angina, hypertension, indigestion, diarrhea, compulsive eating, hypoglycemia, and diabetes.
Muscular-skeletal Pain: Soft tissue injuries, auto accidents, fibromyalgia, tendinitis, strained neck, tennis elbow, and sports injuries.
Allergies: Chronic sinusitis, bronchitis, and asthma.
Mental Health: Anxiety, depression, dementia, and hyperactivity.
Addiction Cessation and Detox: We offer combination therapies to help clients become free of dependency on nicotine, tobacco, recreational drugs, and alcohol.
Other Disorders: Common cold, carpal tunnel syndrome, constipation, cough, diarrhea, ear ringing, edema, excessive sweating, gallbladder problem, hemorrhoids, hiccup, insomnia, intestinal problems, low energy, nausea, nervousness, skin disorders, ulcer, vertigo, and stroke.
Prevention: Obesity, over-weight or underweight, emotional distress.

I had acupuncture done to me once a long time ago and didn’t like it. When my therapist at THG suggested I try it again to help reduce my back pain I was leery, but decided to give it another try.  I am so glad I did!  My pain has been significantly reduced and the treatment did not hurt at all.

Acupuncture Questions & Facts

Read general questions and answers about acupuncture. Also, learn quick insight on how acupuncture can improve fertility below!

Does acupuncture work?

Yes, acupuncture does work! Acupuncture is very effective at reducing pain, stress, and cravings while improving sleep, digestion, and energy. The only factors contributing to its effectiveness are the conditions being treated and if the correct points are being used. Some conditions take longer to treat and are difficult to gauge any change after the first treatment, these conditions are categorized as chronic. Ailments such as lupus or diabetes take a series of treatments before you notice a significant change. Conditions such as pain, or any other acute conditions, tend to have a more noticeable change in severity during and after the initial treatment. There are many different approaches on how to treat a condition and there are at least 360 acupuncture points that are taught to the average acupuncture physician.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Not usually, but it depends on where the needles are placed. There are certain areas of the body where it will be painful if a needle is inserted. For example, inserting a needle anywhere in the fingers or hands will be more painful because there are more nerve endings in these areas. Although for that same reason, this makes those acupuncture points more effective. Painless acupuncture is possible, but to fully benefit from your treatment you do want to have some kind of sensation. That pain is the signal that the brain needs in order to activate the effects of each point. Not every point will be painful, areas where there is more flesh or muscle, tend to be less painful. The pain that you’ll experience is no more than a prick, much less severe than getting an injection from a doctor.

Are the same needles used?

No, all needles are disposed after use. When you begin your treatment a fresh pack of sterile needles are opened just for you and are disposed of immediately afterwards

How long are the sessions?

A full session is about 1 hour. Thirty minutes of that time is spent lying on the table while being treated.

What should I wear?

Any loose clothing will be good for treatment as long as it rolls up past your knees or elbows, but shorts would be ideal.

Are there any side effects?

There are little to no side effects with acupuncture, but minor ones do occur on occasion. Some things that can happen after a treatment are: bruising, fatigue, numbness, soreness, and a tingling sensation after the treatment around the needle sight which can last a few days.

What should I expect after a treatment?

Some things to expect after treatment are: improved sleep, improved digestion, better appetite, more energy, more relaxed, and an overall better sense of well-being.

Pre-treatment instructions:

Be sure to have something to eat before your treatment whether a meal or a small snack, make sure you’re well hydrated, no alcohol or recreational drugs.

Post-treatment instruction:

No vigorous exercise after treatment, no alcohol or recreational drugs, and no sex for the remainder of the day.

 Fertlity

Can acupuncture help with fertility?

Are you or someone you know having a difficult time getting pregnant? Have you tried various pills, potions, and positions without success? If so, don’t give up! We would like to offer you an additional option to improve fertility.

OUR APPROACH
Like everything else we do here at Total Health Guidance, we look at each person from a holistic, integrated approach. We customize our treatment plan for each individual. It starts with nutrition and diet. Our initial 90-minute consultation will be done with both the mother and father-to-be. We will assess your current eating patterns, provide nutritional education, and create a customized food plan for both parties.  The nutrition plan will help prepare the best possible environment for both the egg and the sperm.

From there, we use various acupuncture treatments to treat infertility. Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin, sterile needles into targeted acupuncture points on the body.  Needleless acupuncture is also an effective alternative. Acupuncture points reside on channels or meridians which are pathways in the body. When these points are triggered, they can regulate the way the body functions. Acupuncture can help by addressing issues that impact fertility such as an under-functioning or over-functioning thyroid.

Acupuncture, often combined with a nutritional approach, has been used for hundreds of years to treat many causes of infertility.   Acupuncture can be compared to chiropractic treatments or physical therapy in that it is a process. Most people will not see immediate results as it takes time. Most of our patients were treated for three to four months before they were successful at getting pregnant.
